One of the major goals of NASA’s Structure and Evolution of the Universe (SEU) program is to probe the extreme environment in the vicinity of black holes. Over the past 10 years, the study of black holes in the Universe has moved from a quest to prove that they exist to making detailed studies of their properties and testing the laws of physics under extreme conditions. This change in emphasis has been driven by recent X-ray, optical, and radio breakthrough observations. These have established that stellar mass black holes in our galaxy and supermassive black holes (millions to billions times the mass of our Sun) at the nucleus of galaxies are relatively commonplace. The close vicinity of black holes represents the most extreme environment accessible to observational astronomy. By finding observational features that originate from close to the event horizon, we are uniquely able to probe Einstein’s theory of general relativity in the extreme limit. Now that we are certain black holes exist, the SEU theme is setting out to study these enigmatic objects in extreme detail.
